Meet Mason Martinez, 5th Grader
As a first-time DSA student, what were you nervous about? Just coming here. This is my first year at a private school, but it's been better than I thought.

What do you like about DSA so far? I like the discipline. It helps me do what I'm supposed to do at school. I just don't like getting a lot of marks!

What's your favorite thing Mrs. Lee Lee cooks? Sonic day - mozzarella sticks and popcorn chicken.

Who is your favorite teacher? They're all nice...this is hard. Mrs. Williams is my favorite.

If you could do anything after graduation, what would you do? Firefighter! My grandpa on my dad's side is one and I think it's cool.
Meet Ben Hair, Director of Operations
What does a typical day look like as DSA's Director of Operations? It usually means picking up the slack and fixing whatever is broken, which changes every day. Today I'm cleaning tables and putting together a SmartBoard. I've fixed doorknobs, worked with the HVAC people, "babysat" classes before... floating wherever I need to be.

What did you do before this position & what brought you to DSA? I worked in telecommunication. I first worked with Deviney Construction, operating heavy machinery and putting telephone equipment in the ground. Then I went back to school for electronics certifications and started working for AT&T. Time ran out with AT&T and God wanted me out of the telecommunication business. I didn't see myself working at a school, but finally surrendered. I love being at DSA and it's been a completely different working environment, but I've loved every minute of it.

What projects did you work on this summer? The big project was to complete the 4th & 5th grade classroom. I've never built a classroom before, but thankfully Mr. Burns helped me every step of the way. I couldn't have done it without his help.

How have you seen DSA impact Greenwood? I never had much interaction with the kids before, but seeing how the teachers genuinely love the students and know them by name, blows my mind. The work environment I came from was high stress with everyone competing against one another and so much negativity. Now I'm with a group of people committed to the mission - it's not just a job - everyone wants to be here.
August came and went and it's hard to believe we're already in September! We experienced many firsts this month: Bible and music class twice a week, two lunch periods (one for elementary and one for middle/high school), pee wee football practice at 7:30AM, students meeting with our new Mental Health Specialist, and Meet the Teacher night for 4th - 6th grade families (with 28 of 32 families represented!!).

Seeing the younger students on campus brings a whole new feel to the school. They are so eager, so excited, and so small! We try to wear them out and slow their minds down by having them move first thing in the morning with PE/Football, and then again right after lunch with a thirty minute recess. A handful of 4th graders enrolled because they did not pass the third grade gate (reading test with public schools), and I'm optimistic by the time those students are 8th graders at DSA, we will have them on or close to grade-level in reading. But even more exciting, they get to learn about God and His plan for their life every day. By the time they are in 8th grade, they will have a much better understanding of His Word and His plan of salvation.

Over the next nine months, I am asking for your prayers for the souls of each of the 103 students enrolled this year. And for the many young men who have attended
DSA in the past. God is the only one who can change their hearts so we pray for that exact thing to happen.

I am thankful for every person who reads these updates, and hope you are encouraged by the work God is doing here in Greenwood, MS!
