Meet Zion McDaniel, 10th Grader

How long have you been a student at DSA? I have been at DSA since the 7th grade.

Describe a time you’ve had to visit Ms. Glass, the School Counselor. Just to talk about anything that I may feel uncomfortable or comfortable about.

What is the best advice Ms. Glass has ever given you? The best advice she ever told me was to keep going no matter what the circumstances are.

How has DSA impacted you academically and spiritually? It has impacted me a lot by teaching you things that most schools do not teach you, and the Bible.

Any advice you'd give a new student at DSA? Just be yourself.

Stephanie Glass, Administrative Assistant & Guidance Counselor
Describe your new role as Guidance Counselor at DSA. As the Guidance Counselor, I  advise students on academic matters, which can lead to long-term personal relationships with both students and their parents. I analyze a student's performance in class, help them develop a plan for their academic career that corresponds with their skills and interests, and also facilitate communication between parents, teachers, and students about any behavior and academic problems.

How often do you meet with students and what benefits have you seen from these meetings? I try to meet with students who I see have a hard time transitioning from public school to private school during their study hall. And also l serve as a liaison for the parents.

How do you track students' ACT scores? Another duty of mine is to assist the high school students with signing up for the ACT and monitoring their progress. Delta Streets is partnered with Delta State University’s Trio program, which allows our students to register for the ACT and tutoring at NO COST to our students.

Describe how you motivate students to care about their future? I try to motivate all students, but especially the seniors that in life we’re going to have some problems, but you have to pick yourself up and keep going. This race is not given to the swift or the strong, but to the one who endures to the end.
For the first time, we have freed up time for both our Dean of Academics and Guidance Counselor to realistically be able to fulfill the roles of each position.

Mrs. Melanie Jennings is able to focus on students who struggle academically and communicate with all parties involved. Struggling students are having conversations with her on a weekly basis, teachers are communicating with her about certain students who need assistance, and she spends time talking with student’s parents. Along with overseeing all things academics, she also oversees Reading Plus. This is an estimate, but I’m guessing we will read an extra million words this year. And the extra words will go hand-in-hand with Mrs. Jennings' daily monitoring of the students and their activity on Reading Plus.
Ms. Stephanie Glass now has time (last year she had the same role but taught five classes) to focus on students enrolling and taking the ACT, communicating with the juniors and seniors about college and career opportunities, as well as communicating with parents about what school documents are needed for their son’s next stage of life. As we continue to add lower grades, keeping student records straight is more time consuming.

Thankfully, Mrs. Jennings and Ms. Glass have been at DSA for multiple years so they both are already excelling in their new roles!
DSA is now set up to receive donations through stock transfer!
