Coach Giordano Names Jakerrius Bates
"Most Improved" for the 2023 DSA Football Season

"At the beginning of the season, Jakerrius Bates was competing to even get playing time on the offensive and defensive lines. But by the middle of the season, Bates had become one of our best offensive lineman and a dependable starter on the defensive line."
-Bo Giordano, Head Football Coach

Edna Williams, History Teacher
Describe your position at Delta Streets Academy. I serve as the History teacher - American History, Word History, and Mississippi Studies.

How did you hear about DSA & is it different than you expected? I heard about  Delta Streets through Melanie Jennings’ rave reviews of the school! My expectations of the school are exemplified daily through DSA’s standards and mission.

What is your favorite part of the school day? My favorite part of the school day is free lunch! Never have I not paid for my lunch in 38 years of teaching and the pleasure of having lunch with a businessman on one side of you and a preacher on the other side of you. Conversation of many topics empowers me. Seriously, my favorite part is when 10th graders enter my classroom, eagerly awaiting to dwell on World History and their lives in Greenwood.

How do you believe DSA is unique from other schools? DSA is definitely unique from any school! The behavioral system with marks, all male students, the ratio of teacher-student, and the efforts of spiritual enrichment surpass any educational setting around the Mississippi Delta and Mississippi.
Another Open Date Classic in the books! It's always good to see so many familiar faces who have supported us for so long. I get asked occasionally why we do a fundraiser in the Metro-Jackson area since the school is located in the MS Delta, and the answer is pretty simple...there are a bunch of families in the metro area who love the mission and vision of DSA.

During the two day event, we had our inaugural pickleball tournament which turned out much better than I was expecting (having never run a pickleball tournament before). All the players and teams had a great time and the games were fun to watch. A huge shout out to the PickleJar for allowing us to use their space. It was drizzling that morning and it didn't affect the tournament at all. We hope to do both the pickleball tournament and the golf tournament again next year.

The sporting clays event is always a good time with good fellowship and great food. We had 16 teams participate this year and all had a good time. Some were better shots than others! Majority of the teams have participated in almost all the sporting clays events we have held in the Jackson area, so it is always good to be able to give them an update on the school and the young men impacted.

The drawdown ends up being a blast from the past every year. It takes me back to the Reservoir Racquet Club and 471 soccer and baseball fields. It might be a friend I played high school football with, a Sunday school teacher from junior high, or a coach I played against in little  league baseball, it seems like everyone is there! But, there are also new faces (or newer faces) who love DSA and want an update and to support the mission just as much as the "old friends."

Those two days are long but good, not only for DSA, but for me. The encouragement received makes it that much easier to get up the next week, hold the line, and love our students, our staff, and our volunteers that much more.

SO THANK YOU!
